WFH Not Solution for Jakarta Air Pollution, Says Observer

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A public policy observer from Trisakti University, Trubus Rahadiansyah, assessed that the work from home (WFH) policy is not the right solution to dealing with Jakarta’s air pollution.

As reported earlier, the Jakarta provincial government would implement a hybrid work system for state civil servants (ASN) starting in September to improve the air quality. This system allows city employees to work flexibly in the office or from home.

WFH is not the right solution

According to Trubus, the implementation of WFH is not the right solution to the problems of air pollution in the capital. “Regarding pollution, in the short term, [the solution] is not WFH,” he said on Tuesday, August 15, 2023.

He argued that the WFH order for workers on September 5-7, 2023, coinciding with the 43rd ASEAN Summit, was like a drug that could suddenly cure a problem.

This policy, he added, should not be just a plan but should be evaluated and sustainable. The government should also involve all parties, including the private sector, and provide compensation or impose sanctions for violations.

Observer’s suggestion

Trubus further suggested that the Jakarta provincial government optimize emission testing in accordance with Governor Regulation No. 66 of 2020.

“Apply emission tests. If possible, issue a policy on vehicle age limit. But this also requires courage because the city will be dealing with the business players of cars, used cars, and used motorcycles,” he said.

He also acknowledged that the governor’s regulation could not be optimally implemented due to budget constraints and a lack of public education on emission tests.

“These are short-term solutions [for air pollution]. After that, it also depends on the weather so people think it’s something that doesn’t need to be implemented,” Trubus said.
